I was in one of the big box computer stores yesterday and a guy was buying a Mac mini. He asked what was the failure rate. The manager said we see about 34% return in the Mac. He then said this was better than the "average" of 38%. Huh? What a bizarre thing to say.
In Googling failure rates PC, 2006 data from Gartner pegs the annual failure rate at near 25% over two years. For Mac, there's little current data mostly forum entries and tales of woe.
Anyone experience a 1 in 3 failure rate with sets? You corporate IT types, what's been your experience.
As someone in the industry of sales and repairs, I can say that PC failure rates vary between laptops and desktops. Desktop PCs have about a 22% return rate in the first year, 49% in the second year, and 65% in the third year. Laptop PCs have about 26% in the first year, 52% in the second year, and 78% in the third year. Things do not last nearly as long as they used to.
ReplyDeleteOn the Mac side of things their reputation is not what it used to be. All macs are roughly comparable to the laptop statistics, although with the new releases in October for the Macbooks those states will warp a little over the next year or so. This is because with the solid case we have more durability during shipping and use, but with the LED screens we have less established technology. Its up in the air whether or not the situation will improve or deteriorate. I hope this helps, I recommend getting some sort of extended coverage on any new computer: Expect it to fail, and be ready for it.
